22nd September 2022 ISSUE 01

Welcome to the very first edition of the Southend Primary Schools Sports Association newsletter. Here you will find results from our many sporting competitions, opportunities for our young people, news and up-and-coming competitions.

Table Tennis competition

On Wednesday 21st September our first sporting event of the academic year, table tennis took place at Thorpe Hall. We had 7 schools competing in the boys competition in the morning followed by 4 schools in the afternoon for the girls competition. Pupils play in teams of 4, with the first player to reach 11 points securing a win. The top 2 schools from the competition go through to represent the borough of Southend in the Essex school games competition on Tuesday 18th October.

A huge well done to Earls Hall boys and girls winning both competitions and securing their position in the Essex finals followed by the Thorpe Hall boys and Milton Hall girls finishing in silver position.
We wish all 3 schools the best of luck in the finals.

We like to provide community exit routes for our young people to follow on from the sports that they participate in. For anyone looking for a table tennis coach please see detail below:

National Fitness Day 2022

National Fitness Day took place on Wednesday 21st September and is a chance to highlight the role physical activity plays across the UK, helping us raise awareness of its importance in assisting us lead healthier lifestyles through being physical active.

In celebration of NFD we challenged our schools to participate in a challenge called 'Skip, Hop, Horray' to copy and learn a skipping video for each of the different year groups. The videos can be found here:

School Games Values:

You may notice your children/pupils wearing some colourful stickers/badges.

We follow the 6 school games values

  • Teamwork
  • Self Belief
  • Respect
  • Passion
  • Honesty
  • Determination

Within all of our sporting events, we aim to give out and reward as many of the school games values to as many pupils as possible if we note one of the values being achieved. The aim is for every child to receive a sticker for each of the values. Pupils will soon be given a certificate in which they can place their stickers on throughout the year.

 Eco Friendly

We know that climate change is something that is prominent in the hearts and minds of young people. We want to become more sustainable and eco-friendly and we need your help.

We would like to know what the Southend Primary School Sports Association (SPSSA) can do in order to become more Eco Friendly.

We have asked schools to speak to their young people and gage the youth voice by perhaps speaking to the schools council/ sports leaders and have asked them this:
Question: What can we do to become more sustainable at sporting events/competitions??

Is there something you'd like to see more or less of at competitions? perhaps we could look at the use of single use plastics and cutting down on them?

Please email any suggestions/Ideas to:  kfitzgibbon@eastwood.southend.sch.uk

We will start using the Eco friendly award and it will be linked to one of the 6 school games values listed above. Keep an eye out for a green Eco friendly pin badges.

We can make a sgnification contribution to enviornmental sustainability!

Panathlon Cricket

We invited some of our Southend schools to attend a cricket session run by Panathlon in Loughton on Wednesday 21st September. These events are specifically targetted to SEN children, disengaged or children showing low self-esteem to name a few. These sessions always recieve fantastic feedback and the children love attending them.

We are delighted to say that both of our Southend schools finished in 1st and 2nd place. Darlinghurst came away with GOLD medals and Richmond came away with SILVER medals. A fantastic achievement, well done to all involved.
