Hamstel Junior School

Schools policy towards PE & Sport

At Hamstel Junior School, we aim to educate pupils through the ??ᬮ???physical??ᬮ?묢 medium. Our structure aims to provide opportunities that will develop physical, personal, cognitive and social skills and attitudes. Physical Activity develops the children??ᬮ?묢s knowledge, skills and understanding, so that they can perform with increasing competence and confidence in a range of physical activities.  The teaching of Physical Education (PE) promotes an understanding in children of their bodies in action. It involves thinking, selecting and applying skills and promotes positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle. Thus we enable them to make informed choices about physical activity throughout their lives.

The aims of Physical Activity  at Hamstel Junior:

??ᬨ?         to enable children to develop and explore physical skills with increasing control and co-ordination;

??ᬨ?         to encourage children to work and play with others in a range of group situations;

??ᬨ?         to develop the way children perform skills and apply rules and conventions for different activities;

??ᬨ?         to increase children??ᬮ?묢s ability to use what they have learnt to improve the quality and control of their performance;

??ᬨ?         to teach children to recognise and describe how their bodies feel during exercise;

??ᬨ?         to develop the children??ᬮ?묢s enjoyment of physical activity through creativity and imagination;

??ᬨ?         to develop an understanding in children of how to succeed in a range of physical activities and how to evaluate their own success.

Pupils receive between 2 - 2.5 hours of curriculum PE each week, including indoor and outdoor games and swimming.  There are also many breakfast, lunchtime, afterschool and homework club opportunities for pupils to participate.

Aims for the future

Our target for the future is to increase the number of clubs on offer, giving a wider range of children more opportunity to engage in physical activity.  We are trying to enthuse those children who might not normally participate through specialist coaching.  Examples:

??ᬨ?         The recruitment of a Essex Pirates Basketball Coaches to work with pupils - giving real life experience to children.

??ᬨ?         Approaching those students who might not feel P.E is for them through smaller specialized group work eg with TOPS Activity resources and equipment and lunchtime play.

Anneka says??ᬮ?..

As a new PLT, I have found our SSCO to be of invaluable help. We have been able to start new clubs, thus participate in more competitions and generally raise the profile of sport in school. The coaches have been reliable, encouraging my school to allow more sporting events/clubs to happen. I have found there to be a wide range of activities that I can chooses to cater for the needs of the children in my school and all have been thoroughly enjoyed. The events I have attended have always been extremely well run and efficient encouraging further participation.  Hamstel Junior School looks forward to continuing its partnership with the East SSP.  Thank you very much for everything you do J
