 Info on school
Thorpedene Junior School, opened in 1960, serves a wide social catchment area on the Thorpe Bay and Shoeburyness borders. The school shares an extensive site with Thorpedene Infant School and Shoeburyness High School. In April, 1994, the school attained Grant Maintained Status and then became a Foundation School on the 31st August, 1999. The school provides an education for children between the ages of 7 and 11 years. Most of the children who join the school at 7 transfer automatically from Thorpedene Infant School.

In recent years, due to the school's popularity, the roll has been steadily increasing and a significant number of the children live out of the school's catchment area.
The building consists of twelve large classrooms, each with its own cloakroom area, toilets and art area. A demountable building is used as a games room at lunchtime and music room for class lessons and peripatetic teaching.

There is a hall which is used for assemblies, physical and other activities, and as a dining area at lunchtime.
Our SEN room is opposite the office and is used to teach small groups.
The school house, previously used as a residence for the Site Manager, has been refurbished to provide further resources space, interview room, cooking area, and training rooms. The Site Manager's office and work room with extra toilet facilities are also housed in the bungalow. The garden has been developed as a pond/wildlife area.
Our new front entrance will open in 2007.
An ICT Suite has been built and became operational in September 2000, This has been funded from the school's central budget and provides 17 networked computers, Interactive whiteboard and web cam facilities. In 2005 Interactive whiteboards were installed in 8 of the 12 classrooms with the remaining 4 classrooms having them in 2006. All classrooms have three networked computers for use in all subject areas.

In 2003 a new school library was finished and this provides an extra resource room and houses a second interactive whiteboard for small groups to use. This room is also used as a base for class 5H.

The school has a large playground at the front of the school and a spacious playing field for outdoor activities with football pitches, running tracks etc at the rear together with a smaller playground with balancing equipment. An additional car park has been made adjacent to the school and behind the School House for the ever growing staff and visitors.

Each year group will complete two lessons per week as a part of their class timetable which falls between 1.5 hrs and 2 hrs per week for every child. Children in Year 5/6 are taught by a specialist for one lesson and a class teacher for their other lesson. In years 3 and 4 the children are taught by their class teacher for one lesson, and a in school specialist for the other lesson. All class lessons follow our term plans and lessons are based on the Val Sabian resource.
Thorpedene also have a swimming program that will run for a term (1 session per week) for Years 4, 5 and 6.
