About: Bournes Green Infant

Bournes Green Infant School was opened in 1972 and is an unusual and attractive open-plan design with three double units opening from a central hall. The school is situated in a residential area in close proximity to Thorpe Bay Station.

We have 181 children on roll, aged from 4 to 7 years. All children join the school in September at the start of the school year in which they are 5 and spend 3 years here before moving to the junior school which is just next door!

At Bournes Green Infant School the governors, staff, children, parents and carers work together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust in a community that is strengthened and enriched by a diversity of background, culture and religion. Our priority is to foster the self-confidence, self-esteem and independence of all in a climate of growth and opportunity that will enable us to achieve the highest standards.  We actively promote a healthy environment in which children enjoy learning and develop the skills needed to become responsible members of society. We aim to bring learning to life.

Our school believes that physical education and school sport, experienced in a safe and supportive environment, is a vital and unique contributor to a pupil's physical development and well-being.  As well as our school PE curriculum, we offer many extra curricular sports clubs which have proven to be very successful. At present our out of hours clubs include: tag rugby, karate, gymnastics, dance, cheerleading and football. All of these clubs encourage self confidence and most of all they endeavour to make learning new skills FUN! Many of our clubs are run by outside agencies such as Premier Sports and ASSA.  We also offer daily lunch time clubs run by teaching assistants. These include: circus skills, skipping, big game time and obstacle races! All our children take part in daily exercise through the Active8 exercise programme.

Throughout the past year we have entered many "School Sport Tournaments" and we are very proud of achievements so far. In 2008-2009 our successes included winning all of the following events:  KS1 Sports Hall Athletics, KS1 Football and the KS1 Borough Sports. In 2008 we were proud to have made it through to the South Essex Sports Hall Championships in which we finished in third place.

To celebrate the children's achievements, we have a termly "School Sports Assembly". We choose six children, two from each year group to be Sports Stars. These children receive a certificate to say they have worked with enthusiasm and have shown improvement in skills during PE lessons. One child receives a trophy and they are our "Sports Personality of the Term!"

Here at Bournes Green Infant School we will continue to raise the profile of School Sport.

Statement: The Southend Primary Schools Sports Association are committed to the continual safeguarding of our children.
