Our Vision:

Sport is a huge part of school life at SHSG. The high level of achievement and ability in sport is reflected not only in our outstanding results but more importantly in the girls' positive attitude towards PE and exercise.

KS3

At KS3 the girls are introduced to a variety of sports including Invasion games, Fitness activities, Net games, Gymnastics and Dance; all these activities help to enhance skills such as team work, specific skills and performance.

KS4

Physical Education at Ks4 offers the opportunity for the girls to pursue a wider range of activities which will help them make informed choices about how to spend their leisure time in the future. Activities offered include Aerobics, Badminton, Body Synergie, Table Tennis and Volleyball.

The department achieved 100% A* to B in GCSE Physical Education and 100% A to C in GCSE Dance in their first examination year.

Extra Curricular Activities

There are many extra curricular clubs offered at SHSG. The enthusiasm and commitment shown to sport is reflected in the large number of girls who attend clubs. Sports offered include: Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Cross Country, Dance, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rounders, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball. We have many school/club links and enjoy good relationships with these clubs, which enables us to often share "good practice" and facilities.

Significant Successes

We are the current holders of the Sainsbury's Junior Girls National Schools' Track and Field Athletics Cup and are the runners up in this competition in the intermediate girls' age group. We have won the junior cup 7 times; the most any individual school in England has won this title. This season we are Borough Champions at all age groups in Netball and the year 7 team are the County Champions. The under 16 squad are South East Essex Netball Champions.

We have won the borough Cross Country Championships for the last 30 years along with the Borough Track and Field Athletics Title. We are the current year 7 and 8 Cross Country Champions and we also hold the borough Swimming title.

We are very proud to have achieved "Sports mark" status for the second year. Sports mark is Sport England's accreditation scheme for secondary schools. It is a developmental and auditing tool that rewards and recognises a school for it's out of hour's sports provision and a broad and balanced Physical Education curriculum.

Facilities

The brand new sports hall and fitness suite is now open at SHSG. Commonwealth Medallist Karen Pickering, MBE was joined by the Mayor of Southend and members of the local schools and sports community to celebrate the launch of the new facilities.

The fitness suite has 8 pieces of cardio equipment from Techno Gym comprising of 4 treadmills, 2 cross trainers and 2 cycles. All the equipment, including the resistant machines has integrated TV screens with touch screen technology allowing the user to set their own personalised training programmes and monitor their progress.

The Physical Education classroom comprises an interactive white board and video recording facilities.

We also boast the best outdoor facilities in Southend with a field allowing us to have a 6 lane 400 metre athletics track, adjacent to which we now have 4 x 114 metres of tartan running track, with long and triple jump facilities and a high jump fan. We have 4 Netball courts and 6 tennis courts.
